Terry McGovern extended his winning streak by stopping Chicago’s Eddie Santry in five rounds in Cariaco. Santry fought hard but was overwhelmed as McGovern delivered crushing blows to the jaw and ear, knocking him to the floor for the count after a clinch.
Princeton Indiana Patrick Jones alias Teddy Monahan Joseph Linden alias John Ryan John Morton alias A J Childs were convicted and sentenced to an indefInite term for blowing up the Bank of McGinnis Teels Co Owensville on January 12 securing 1600 and valuables
In Washington on February 3 at a special Ways and Means Committee meeting a bill was approved to establish a Porto Rico tariff system set at 25 percent of the rates in the regular tariff laws.
Governor Taylor ordered guards to deny civilian entry to the Capitol grounds and planned to seek an injunction to curb his actions. A stenographer Alonzo Walker and Democratic lawyers gained entry and posted a legal notice on the Executive Mansion door, leading to Walker’s arrest. Goebel, in Frarxrokt Kentucky, has a better night with more regular respiration and slower pulse. Doctors warn no hope for recovery but note he is holding his own and show slight improvement as of 1:55 PM.
Frankfort constable Harrod presents what he calls key evidence against Harland Whittaker the alleged assassin in the Goebel case Whittaker reportedly offered to pay thousands to be allowed to escape and disputes Capt Davis account Whittaker says he was on the third floor while Goebel was shot in Governor Taylor’s building.
Senator-elect Blackburn and Representatives Rhea Smith Allen Gilbert and ex-Representative Thompson, with Senator Lindsay, urged President McKinley to avoid federal intervention in Kentucky. They warned armed troops would spark a violent uprising and urged a peaceful, legal settlement. Blackburn and Rhea planned to depart for Kentucky that night.
At a Cabinet meeting the decision was made that Kentucky does not require Federal interference and the President will take no action under current conditions. A Washington statement echoed that no cause exists to justify National Government intervention and that the Governor has been informed.
It is reported here that William S. Wright, ex member of the Kentucky Legislature and a prominent Democrat, was assassinated at Boone's Fork near Hagan. No details are available.
