Rusk in New York for 10 days of talks with Eban and Thant

Secretary of State Dean Rusk arrived in New York for a 10 day diplomatic run that includes meetings with Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban and United Nations figures Thant and Arenales. Eban spoke on a new Middle East peace plan and hinted at a package deal for the Arabs while denying the Soviet plan.

Stockpile Of Steel Shrinking

A steady liquidation of steel inventories by consumers fuels optimism for the steel industry in early next year. Steel Magazine notes the 15 million ton stockpile had shrunk at about two million tons per month, with automakers planning to produce 2,548,600 passenger cars in Q4, the highest since 1965. Total yearly raw steel output is seen near 126 million tons, down about 20 percent from 1967.

Milk Control Changes Name to Milk Marketing Board

Harrisburg AP reports the Milk Control Commission is renamed the Milk Marketing Board under a new law effective Sunday. The Milk Control Law becomes the Milk Marketing Law, with a licensing period for milk dealers and haulers now from July 1 to June 30, replacing the former May 1 to April 30 cycle.

New York AP A Defense Department trial examiner ruled that Alfred N. Johnson a former Communist member should not be barred from government secrets. Johnson 53 joined the party in 1933 and left in 1950 while working on government contracts. The ruling reversed a prior denial and the department plans an appeal.

Third statewide Pog tte debate in Philadelphia

Richard Lenger and Richard Schwelker led a third statewide televised and radio broadcast debate Tuesday night from the WCAU studios in Philadelphia. The half hour program will be carried by several Philadelphia radio stations and originate from Pittsburgh. Incumbent Democrat Joseph Clark and Republican challengers Isa and another candidate were expected to participate with a fourth debate planned for October 20.
