Blacklick Fire Destroys Block in Early Morning Blaze

A fire starting in Wissinger’s barber shop in Blacklick destroyed eleven frame buildings in the business district around 1 60 o clock. The blaze, resisted by a bucket brigade, raged two hours, gutting stores such as Miller’s clothing Palaz zi’s fruit and Wissinger’s barber shop, with two houses dynamited to halt it. Losses include Miller’s $2,500 Palazzi $1,200 Shepley $4,000 Genarro $2,200 Grader $1,000 Snyder $ unknown Gardner $2,000 and other damaged properties. the town’s bank survived but the block was ruined and several families displaced.

Machinist Scalded In Steam Explosion Near Pittsburg Coal Plant

Homer City Pa Sept 29 G W Wells master machinist of Rochwater and Pittsburg Coal Company plant was scalded by a premature steam line explosion while supervising repairs on a six inch line A valve failed and 110 pounds of pressure struck his chest flinging him 40 feet down stairs His clothing was torn from his body He was rushed to Indiana on a streetcar then to the Adrian Hospital in Punxsutawney The hospital reports slight hope for recovery.

Railroad Builders Active in Harringburg District

Capital stock increases were filed with the State department at Harringburg this week by several railroad companies. Blacklick & Yellow Creek Railroad Company raises from $100,000 to $200,000 in Steatfield county. Brookville & Mahoning Railroad Company increases from $10,000,000 to $15,000,000 in Jefferson and Armstrong counties. Work on the line has resumed and activity is high along the route.

Pennsylvania to Dedicate Cold Harbor Monument for Civil War Units

The General Assembly authorized a monument at Cold Harbor battlefield in Virginia to honor Batteries B and F of the 112th and 2d Regt Heavy Artillery, the 18th Infantry, and several Pennsylvania Cavalry and Infantry regiments. Dedication is scheduled for October 20 with free transportation to honored discharged soldiers, ticketed by Capt. Josiah Hissong of Bedford County. travel allowed October 15 to 20 outbound and return through November 1.

Mardis Victim of Unusual Accident in Dilltown

Dilltown Sept 20 Dr Jasper Mardis was the victim of an unusual accident while whittling on a public road. He tripped and fell, the blade cutting his right leg. Unable to move, he lay for about an hour until a wayfarer carried him home. The wound was dressed and he recovered with help from Chamberlains Storm extra. Local news also notes W Berene of Saltsburg consulting an attorney about council water dispute. settlement is probable.

Fire destroys large Dilltown dwelling. family away

A big blaze tore through William Conrad’s Dilltown home on Tuesday afternoon as Frank Conrad’s family was absent. The fire, started by a faulty flue, gutted the house a mile south of town, but neighbors aided by the residents saved much of the goods. Losses estimated at 2500, with about 300 insured.
