A polemical urged rally urges citizens to buy Liberty Bonds and contribute to the global healing effort. The message invokes a mock doctor, Old Doctor Dollar, portraying financing as the cure for a bleeding world. It stresses collective sacrifice and timely support to avert further suffering.
Section one lists 367 names with 104 in this group: killed in action, wounded severely, died from wounds, died from disease, prisoners, missing in action, and other causes. Pennsylvania names include Walter F. Barent and John Baran among many others from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and nearby towns with ranks from private to lieutenant. Lawrence Ludwig Carnegie and Earl Jesse Melvin Philadelphia join John Jack Metzler Northampton in urging Indiana County to lend 3 640 000 to Uncle Sam. The drive, led by Mrs Elkin and Mr Daugherty, begins today with a house to house canvas to meet a 450 000 quota. The Field Club, limited to agents with at least 200000 in paid insurance yearly, redirected its annual outing funds to purchase a Whit ambulance for overseas service. A photo of the ambulance to aid wounded Yankees is printed. John A. Miller of Wayne Avenue is a long-time Field Club member with notable yearly production.
British army reports from the Meuse front describe renewed Allied gains as French and American forces press toward the Argonne Forest and Laon-Monthois railway. Prisoners and guns are captured in substantial numbers, with 80 000 prisoners and 565 guns taken in the past week. The Bulgarians suffer defeat as Serbian and Greek forces move toward Bulgarian territory. Paris notes a big French attack in Champagne capturing Somme Py with gains north of Fontaine en Dormois and two villages near the Aisne while Germans counterattacks falter. Weather improves with clear skies.
