The board on Saturday October 21 approved introducing thrift banking as a school curriculum component. The action aims to establish a banking system in local schools and integrate financial literacy into instruction.
In a special meeting the Board of Education approved a plan to create a school wide banking system in which each classroom becomes a bank for about fifteen minutes weekly. Students deposit as little as one cent, earn interest, and receive pass books as they learn savings discipline under local bank oversight. A lecture on "The Laughing Dollars" will educate parents as well.

A disaster on Lake Erie left 21 crew members dead as Duluth owned whaleback James B Colgate sank after a Friday storm. Captain Walter Grashaw survived after 34 hours on a life raft, rescued near Conneaut. The vessel went down off Long Point Canada opposite Erie. Rescue ships Marquette and Bessemer No 2 saved the captain.

PUNXSUTAWNEY Oct. 23 The Eleanora mine of Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal and Iron Co at Eleanora Slope eight miles away was blown up Saturday night. Mines in the group had been idle since a miners strike last Monday noon. The blast occurred two miles back from the mouth. Investigators consider causes including a switch left unpulled by the fire boss or a possible act by an angry worker. A rigid investigation is underway.
