War writer 7 M Roberts Jr weighs when V E Day might come in Europe. Reports say Allied drive 48 is ahead of schedule though weather fog and rain hinder air and supply moves. A breakthrough at Arnhem could crumble German lines, with Eisenhower poised to press a decisive blow unless delays occur.

Allied air power targets Kassel and adjacent rail hubs in Germany as 700 bombers strike Kassel behind the Siegfried Line. German defenses engage over Holland, with heavy losses on both sides. Additional raids hit Ehrang, Gerolstein, Pronsfeld, Creche Forest, and rail infrastructure across Hungary, Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece amid persistent airstrikes.
Russian and Estonian forces drive toward Tallinn as German retreat accelerates on the Baltic front. Grozov and Malinovskiy massed units threaten northern Transylvania, with Riga’s defense and Arad rail junction key as Red Army cuts railways and presses to sever German and Hungarian links. Bridgeheads form on the Vistula as Warsaw reports fall.

MacArthur reports 215 tons of bombs dropped on Halmahera, Ceram, and Celebes as Morotai base is secured.
President Roosevelt said the Quebec conference with Churchill studied plans to gradually restore full authority to the Italian people for their rehabilitation. He noted progress at Dumbarton Oaks on postwar problems and hinted at measures to prevent starvation in Italy this winter while discussing Germany in general terms.
Vice President Wallace told a Madison Square Garden audience that a Republican victory in November could return the nation to a Harding era normalcy and Hoover era panic. In Chicago last night a dynamite blast damaged the home of William H. Johnson superintendent of Chicago public schools. Johnson suffered a minor arm slash and his wife and eight year old daughter Patricia escaped unharmed. Police call the act not amateur amid a two week fight over the superintendent's order abolishing the school transfer system. Damages are estimated at about $1000 for the home and $500 each for two neighboring buildings.
Two trucks nearly collided head on near Strongstown Pennsylvania in the early morning. Ray Shaffer of Mayport BR D sustained scalp and limb lacerations and neck cuts and is hospitalized at Indiana Hospital. Delbert Deckard of Bloomington Indiana County was uninjured. Damages to both trucks about 1400 dollars.
Tomorrow Saturday the Clymer Boy Scouts will collect scrap paper for Uncle Sam all day. Residents should bundle paper and place on front porch or yard for easy pickup. Neighbors urged to cooperate as the Scouts conduct the drive.

Indiana County responds gratefully to Potter County’s call for help to save the potato crop. A bus load of high school students will depart Sunday for one week, with instructions to bring warm clothes and a bite to eat. A second bus load is planned for the following Sunday to aid in return transport.
