A 41-year-old Johnstown man, John Murray, died Wednesday at Bethlehem Steel Corp Franklin Division in Johnstown when a relining furnace device toppled him from an elevated platform. Authorities said he fell about 50 feet.
President Nixon was not in the armored Lincoln when it hit a bicycle at a Washington service station. The cyclist, Orville Jackson, 32, was cited for failing to stay in his lane. Police estimated over 100 dollars in damage to the car, valued at about 500 thousand dollars. Jackson sought court combat.
About 7,500 license applications were received on opening day at the Indiana County Treasurer’s office. With a county allotment of 5,300 licenses, treasurer Paul Wass said roughly 2,200 applications will be returned. Any further applications will also be refused, distributed on a first come first served basis.
Blairsville police identified Paul William Gluz a 37 year old Covington Georgia man as the Route 22 crash victim. He died of crush injuries after his pickup collided with a tractor trailer on Route 22 near Blairsville at 745 am. Gluz formerly lived in Van Meter Westmoreland County.
A 16-year-old man was arrested in Manhattan on suspicion of stabbing Wolfgang Friedman, a 65-year-old Columbia University international law scholar, during a daytime mugging near the campus. Mingues confessed involvement but denied wielding the knife, with witnesses guiding police to the suspect.
U S military authorities disclosed that American planes mined rivers and canals in the northern Military Region 1 of South Vietnam to slow the flow of war materiel to North Vietnamese forces. The Ben Hai and Cua Viet rivers were among those possibly mined, with some mines now inactive and others active. The Command noted records of mine locations are being kept for future handling when friendly forces return.
In Harrisburg the House split 92 to 88 on recommitting a bill intended as a vehicle for Shapp administration auto insurance reform. Democrats listed a large bloc against the motion, with numerous names including Bennett and Crowley, while Republicans listed many in support. several members did not vote. All others cast for the motion.
Uganda claims Tanzania sent 10,000 troops to the border and vows preemptive air and sea strikes to thwart another invasion. Tanzania warns it may pull forces from defense if Ugandan air raids continue. Uganda accuses ex-President Obote allies in Tanzania with backing from Britain and Israel. Sudan reports Libyan military flights to Uganda and seizes arms aboard Libyan aircraft.
Senator George McGovern drew standing ovations in Philadelphia on his first war focused address since securing the Democratic nomination. He branded the Vietnam conflict an assault on America’s decency and self respect, urging end to bombing and release of prisoners while denouncing Nixon’s policy.
Harrisburg reports the governor faces a bill expanding the state board of education powers over higher education. The House passed the measure 1862, granting the board authority to advise on major college changes for the secretary of education to use, rather than granting direct approval power.
New York AP stock list with numerous tickers and prices followed by Treasury balance as of September 15. Cash position shows balance 3.179 trillion plus deposits and withdrawals totaling around 59.8 billion. Total debt stands at 437.344 trillion with gold assets near 10.41 billion.
Congress sent a Senate-passed compromise to the White House designed to cut the number of unseen federal advisory committees. The bill creates a two year life for boards, requires public access to meetings and documents, allows some secrecy, and mandates ongoing review to abolish merge or revise advisory bodies.
A 24 year old, Jean Marc Boutin, told a coroner s inquest he and two friends meant to cause a big flash at the Blue Bird Club on Sept 1 and killed 37 patrons. He said he was drunk and denied intending to kill anyone. Boutin, O Brien and Gilles Eccles are held as witnesses. Boutin and O Brien were arrested in a Vancouver drug raid, Eccles arrested after the fire. He said he aimed to scare the doorman and thought the gas would burn out the steps.
At United Nations in New York a</s> Chinese Soviet clash loomed as Yugoslavia pressed to revive Bangladesh’s UN bid blocked by China in the Security Council. The Soviet Union India Yugoslavia and Britain backed the move while the United States supported the majority. The steering committee faced a vote on 101 agenda items including a debate on measures to prevent terrorism. Secretary General Waldheim pressed for support amid African opposition to the initiative.
Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz signed with the William Morris Agency of Los Angeles. Norman Brokaw says Spitz has offers from movie companies television and advertisers. His first appearance is set for October 5 on television with Bob Hope. Spitz plans to pause credential studies at Indiana University for now.
Pittsburgh RP reports Allegheny County Community College faculty reject trustees plan by 185 to 14 to return to work on interim raises of 650 to 850 dollars while bargaining continues. President Mack says rejecting preserves bargaining leverage, as fall term could be canceled if no final contract by Sept 30. College president Hirt says students were shortchanged and denied classroom access.
