Grim Trail of Property Damage Left In Two States By Big Storm

Hurricane Ione moved along the Atlantic coast toward New England as it weakened to 60 70 mph winds with a 10 12 mph forward pace. It caused four deaths in North Carolina and Virginia and driven heavy rains across southern New England. In Tampico Mexico Hurricane Hilda killed 12, injured 356 and left 15 000 homeless as it wrecked 90 percent of the city.

America Goes On A European Travel Service

A NEA report notes a surge in U.S. travel to Europe as lower and middle income groups join the migration, with a projected record year ahead. Hurricane relief efforts scale Tampico area damage

Mexican President Adolfo Ruiz Contínes ordered unlimited aid for Tampico and nearby towns after a hurricane caused considerable damage. Highways and railroads were washed out, requiring relief supplies to be flown in. Texas officials offered helicopters for relief work. The storm tracked along the North Carolina coast with strong winds and flooding, leaving New Bern and Morehead City inundated and many residents in emergency shelters. Civil defense and Red Cross teams mobilized along the Northeast as preparations intensified.

Pan American Flights Boosted European Travel in June

Pan American Airlines reports 14,780 passengers flown to Europe in June, up 33 percent from a year earlier. An estimated 2,000 travelers per day crossed the Atlantic. The Commerce Department's international office says in 1954 about 420,000 American tourists spent 352 million dollars in Europe and the Mediterranean.
