Nixon Faces Debate Push as Humphrey Gains Momentum

Campaign coverage reports Hubert Humphrey aides favor pressing Nixon to debate on nationwide TV to expose issues. A security crackdown followed two armed escapees as police recovered more than $6,200 and a pistol after a millersburg robbery and multiple home invasions across Dauphin, Mifflin, and surrounding counties.

Restudy urged for Southwest Bypass alignment decision

The county planning commission and highway officials discussed routing the Southwest Bypass to balance access and traffic. They noted past bypass siting mistakes near Indiana Borough, warned a shift could delay construction by about two years, and said the chosen alignment remains economical and suitable. Construction is slated to start in 1970 with completion in fall 1971.

State ID Men To Meet Here Next June

Indiana will host a statewide conference as the Pennsylvania State Division of the International Association for Identification conducts sessions at Rustic Lodge. Columbo Previte, formerly of the County Sheriff's Office, was named 1969 conference chairman at a Pitts burgh meeting. About 150 persons are expected to attend. The 1969 event is scheduled for June 6 and 7. Local committees will be appointed later.

Airline Names Two Executives to New Posts

Allegheny Airlines announced two promotions. Robert F. Roland of Scranton becomes assistant vice president of data services, moving from data processing director. Joseph C. Yeager of Pittsburgh is named director of personnel services and programs, after serving as employment supervisor.

Trucking Convoy Stoned in Pittsburgh Labor Turmoil

A convoy of Razor Express Co trucks bound for Pittsburgh was halted by about 200 men who hurled bricks and stones. Eleven men arrested, one driver beaten, three officers injured. Earlier, 100 wives picketed the Pittsburgh terminal as the strike spread from Ohio. Police cited contempt of court for disobeying a three block distance order. Noted industrial official Mil ton urged adaptation through education.

Gaffney man freed as another pleads guilty in killings

In Gaffney, Lee Roy Martin, 31, pleaded guilty to murder in the 1967 slaying of Lucille Dedmond and received a life term. Roger Dedmond, initially convicted of his wife’s murder, had that conviction overturned and was released, while a judge dismissed the murder charge against him. Martin also faced charges in the strangulations of Opal Buckson, Nancy Parrish, and Nancy Rinehart, with trials pending.

Buchanan Seniority In Doubt

At a Buchanan conference Rep Donaldson refused to answer questions from local citizens except the press. Rep Buchanan and Dr Weber led a later news conference denying claims and asserting Buchanan would retain seniority if reelected. They cited assurances from Donaldson and Speaker Lee in June and a four way telephone talk. Dr Weber accused Mrs Bennett of pressuring Harrisburg while Buchanan claimed the election pressure would not decide voters. Moore supported the GOP and urged a big Republican victory in November.

State Road Deaths On Upsurge

A 40 year old Schuylkill County woman Elizabeth Schad of Kaska was killed when a load of concrete pipe rolled off a truck and crushed her auto on Route 209 near Port Carbon. Other recent victims include Gwendolyn Weimer 18 of Chatham killed on Route 1 near Coatesville Chester County and George Kutzko 78 of Hazleton struck by a vehicle while walking on a Hazleton street Luzerne County.
