SAN FRANCISCO AP A pall of smoke hung over much of Northern California as uncontrolled fires, fed by 40 to 50 mph winds with gusts to 100, burned dry forests and brush. Two men were burned, one seriously, as fires reached Vacaville and threatened Middletown. Twenty homes burned, with $500,000 in damage. Interstates closed as power lines fell and communications suffered. A 4,000 acre blaze southwest of Vacaville burned ranch buildings. another 30,000 acre fire stretched 50 miles in Glenn and Colusa counties. Authorities struggled to assess damage due to poor communications while the disaster spread across the north.

Officers were elected at the Indiana County Unit meeting of the American Cancer Society. Dr Saul Greenwald of Indiana named president succeeding Alan Holsinger who is also from Indiana. Abducts Woman at Gunpoint in Bangor Case
Police said Haller invaded the McGinn home and held Mrs McGinn and her children Stac ay 4 and Pierce 1 prisoner for hours. He released Mr McGinn briefly to visit a hospital patient, then fled with the wife and car after being confronted by police. The man claimed an escape from Bangor State Hospital on Saturday night and appeared lucid early but grew agitated by a nearby phone call.
