Premier Khrushchev told a Japanese delegation he has a new secret weapon that could destroy all life, a remark read as aimed at Mao Zedong and China rather than the West. He stated the weapon was not to be used but warned that Russians would warn back when provoked.
The Citizens' Ambulance Service board elected officers for a one year term. President Robert Luedy, vice president Herbert McAnulty, secretary Mrs. Fred Hildebrand, treasurer Frank Watterson. Subscriptions total $21,504 and local outlets continue selling.
DETROIT AP The United Auto Workers Union set a strike deadline of 10 a.m. Friday at Ford Motor Co in new contract talks. UAW president Walter P Reuther said the union was prepared to bargain in good faith though wage inequities relief time and production standards remained unsettled.
William Gerald Ford 21 of Port Royal died when his car collided with a tractor trailer on Route 22 west of Thompsonstown Juniata County. The truck overturned spilling 38000 pounds of lime onto the highway. James L. Robinson 34 of Bellefonte treated for minor injuries at Lewistown Hospital.
A 63 year old Youngstown man Hugh A Johnston died after his panel truck overturned on Route 56 south of Armagh at 4 15 p m. The crash also involved Carl Peiper 49 of Pittsburgh in another auto. Johnston died of a fractured skull and internal injuries. Peiper was uninjured. Damages were $600 to the truck and $25 to the auto.
Washington officials voiced uncertainty about Khrushchev’s talk describing a possible new Soviet weapon. They considered cobalt bombs, a death ray, and a neutron bomb as plausible among speculative weapons, while noting no solid intelligence confirmed the claim.
In BOTTROP Germany an underground gallery collapsed 2000 feet deep trapping 16 miners for nearly 12 hours. The miners were brought to the surface in the early afternoon and none were injured.
Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina plans to announce he is leaving the Democratic Party to join Barry Goldwater's Republicans. The speech from Columbia at 6 15 p m EST will frame the move as a bid to build a strong two party system in the South.
The Rev. Dr. E. Eugene Cunningham, longtime pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Washington Pennsylvania since 1958, died Monday at age 48. Services are set for Wednesday at the church.
Two of three top leaders of Sunday's coup against Premier Ngu yen Khanh are in government custody in Saigon. Maj. Gen. Duong Van Duc is under house arrest facing trial, while Col. Boston AP reports Sybil Leek declares herself a good witch planning permanent settlement near Concord Massachusetts. She describes witchcraft as a religion and says she studied black magic but poses no harm. Leek, 40, formerly ran an antique shop in England and now travels with husband and two sons seeking a home in America.
Death notices show Mildred Gal Breath DeHaven, 63, of 1227 Philadelphia Street Indiana. Rev. Woodward M. Peffer, of Johnstown, formerly of March. and Effie Alice Moore Warner, 84, of St Thomas Pennsylvania, formerly of Indiana.
Gov. Scranton says Pennsylvania must accelerate highway planning after a six week study by the State Highways Department. He notes urban areas require extra lanes and costly bridges while funds, especially for urban projects, are limited. One Philadelphia mile could cost about 35 million dollars. He warns no single generation can fund all future needs.
