War update from MacArthur and Nimitz describes amphibious landings on Morotas and Dos dos Vieili Vieil i and Dos Dos as the eastern approach to the Philippines. Churchill and Eden pledge Britain will back Japan defeat fully.
American First Army advances breach Siegfried defenses south of Aachen and reach Prim while forces push toward Maastricht and Nancy. German broadcasts claim an 8 mile wedge past the Meuse as Patton’s Third Army drives deep into defenses along a 150 mile front. Limburg and Maastricht are reported crossed amid claims of rapid advances.
Indiana County schedules a blood donor drive with the first center in Indiana beginning November 2 and running through November 39, the second center at Binisville on December 1 and 2. John B. K. Davis, chairman, praises past cooperation and promises more registration details in early November.
United States Civil Service Commission announces a regional examination for post positions at Shelocta Pennsylvania. Applications must be filed with the United States Civil Service at Washington DC no later than September 24 1944. Rub or cream to soften hands and cuticle prior to examination entry.
The 198 hurricane on Sept 21 battered New Jersey and nearby coast resorts. It wrecked the Million Dollar and Steel Piers in Atlantic City, left hundreds homeless, caused extensive damage along coastal towns from Rhode Island to New York, disrupted rail lines, and toppled trees. The freighter Thomas Tracy ran ashore near Rehoboth Beach and broke in two, its crew rescued.
Fragmented dispatches describe Warsaw besieged from without and battles along the Vistula. Russian batteries warned to die at bridges. Provisional capital at Cluj threatened, with regional movements toward Nowogrodek and Prussia as German defenses hold.

A list of 54 Indiana County boys designated to join the armed forces reports for induction on September 25 at the Indiana War Building. Inductees will report to the Indiana Theatre building, Board 3, and proceed to Pittsburgh after pre-induction sessions.

The Right Reverend Austin Pardue newly consecrated bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh will visit Christ Episcopal parish Sunday evening at 8. He succeeds Bishop Alexander Mann and comes to Pittsburgh from Buffalo. Pardue will address and bless a large class of children and adults. This is his first Indiana visit. He authored several books including Read to Say and Our Morale which is the theme of his weekly radio broadcast Mondays at 10 15 PM. Reverend William Marshall invites all interested Indiana folk to attend the service.
Philadelphia news reports a powerful new steam locomotive built at Altoona Pennsylvania works capable of drawing 123 loaded freight cars at speeds around 50 miles per hour. Twenty five others are being built at Altoona Works. The engine is designed to develop more power in its working range at speeds over 20 miles an hour than any previously built. Some crews list milk cottage cheese dried beans and greens among its contents.
Washington dispatch reports CIO steelworkers pressing for a 17 cent hourly raise beyond the war ceiling. The War Labor Board weighed costs and urged executive action by Roosevelt, with a mid October session set to consider general wage stabilization and possible breach of the steel formula.
Obituaries for Clarence Leroy Perry of 402 Carbon Street Butler died September 15 at 1 00 am aged 58, survived by wife Nola Kroh, four daughters and four sons, with services planned. Carl Schofield Hewitt 74 of Seward died at Memorial Hospital Johnstown with survivors including widow Harriet and children. Mrs Anna Alice Weaver of Plumville to be buried in Smicksburg cemetery after services. Robert D. Orner 68 Johns town area founder of Keystone Memorial Co died at 10 oclock pm while preparing to retire. Harry T. Mitchell 425 Philadelphia Street Indiana died September 13 in Indiana Hospital with services set. Carrie M. Altemus Homer City died September 13 at home with service September 18.
