William W. Scranton, leaving for Europe with Nixon, says no discussions about him becoming secretary of state have occurred. He added he has no plan to enter government unless compelled to do so, noting past retirement from public life. In Blairsville, 16 year old Katherine Elwood was injured in a two car crash, treated and released. damage estimated at 400 dollars.
SAIGON AP Major General Keith L. Ware, 52, who earned the nation’s highest combat medal in World War II, was killed Friday in a helicopter crash while surveying his 1st Infantry Division troops near Loc Ninh. The unit had fought a two day battle that left 167 enemy dead. In Michigan, Northern Michigan University reported a freshman orientation joke incident about Eastern Michigan.
Military spokesmen said it was not immediately known if enemy fire caused the crash seven miles south of the Cambodian border and three miles southeast of Loc Ninh. All eight aboard were killed, including three staff members and four crew. the remaining names were withheld pending next of kin notification. All bodies were recovered.
After a Friday night game at East High in Waterloo tensions flared into sporadic shooting and fires as police clashed with Negro crowds on the north east side. Six officers were injured and at least 13 youths arrested as rocks and firebombs were reported. a police sergeant was struck by a bullet under his helmet but safe. Two fires broke out, one destroying an area near Shepherd Lumber and another damaging a classroom at East High, with entry through a window and gasoline ignited on the floor.
