Ten Bowdish children and an orphan boy died when a blaze swept the Bowdish farm home near Kasota Minnesota. Only Joanne Mc Connell aged 14 escaped by leaping from a second story window and bicycling a mile to a telephone. The family had moved to the rented house about a week earlier.
A Pontiac crash killed babysitter Judith Korytkowski and two boys, Jeffery and Gregory Philippart, after a private plane bound for an airplane ride from Detroit to a zoo diverted to a fiery emergency near Pontiac Lake State Park. Pilot Roy McPhail was critically burned.
The Coast Guard cutter Cherokee reports it will attempt a sea rescue of nine aboard the disabled freighter Globe Explorer and resume towing toward land. The group includes four crewmen and five Coast Guard personnel, all in no immediate danger, as the vessel sits about 360 miles southeast of New York amid stormy seas.

A Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department truck carrying about 13 men overturned on a rural Peters Twp road while heading to a blaze. Three firefighters John Stark Arvin Kegel and Phil lip Simmons died and six others were injured, with the warehouse fire destroying a two story rubber tire and toy stock building and threatening nearby homes.
St Marys Pennsylvania woke to 24 degree temperatures early today as cold snap settled over the Elk County community. The report notes the low was recorded overnight with calm winds and clear skies around dawn. Local officials urged residents to bundle up and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Pope Paul VI opened the third and potentially decisive session of the Vatican Ecumenical Council to seek a clarified shared papal episcopal authority. In Saigon a bloodless coup failed as 2,000 rebel troops moved to arrest Premier Nguyen Khanh. Khanh returned to power, called for discipline and unity, and pledged a civilian government while fighting communism. Ky and Vien backed him. Duc capitulated. US officials welcomed Khanh's survival.
Woodrow E. Pickett of San Andreas reported $4.02 in coins stolen at Candles tick Park during a San Francisco coin collectors event. He valued the four silver dollars and two pennies at about $2,500 and planned to sell the prized items. The theft occurred after a park greeting Saturday.
In Rome James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles collapsed amid the Vatican Ecumenical Council ceremonies. Doctors cited heat and fatigue as the cause and he was taken to Blue Sisters Clinic for tests with heart function reported normal.
Harrisburg Democrats demand a full-scale probe of a Lebanon County political ad that opposed recognizing Almighty God in public schools. Otis B. Morse cites a violation of election laws for a sponsorless ad in Palmyra and asks the Fair Campaign Practices Committee to investigate the alleged breach.
Frank Irvin publisher of the Greensburg Tribune-Review for two years died suddenly early Sunday in Atlantic City New Jersey where he had vacationed the past two weeks. He joined the Tribune-Review in 1954 as business manager and was named publisher eight years after the death of David W Mack.
The forecast calls for sunny and warmer conditions today and Tuesday. Tonight will be clear and cold with a low in the 40s and daytime highs between 68 and 74.
German immigrant Spec 4 Hans Puhl of the U S Army risked his life at dawn aiding a wounded refugee to escape over the Berlin wall. West Berlin police clashed with East German guards in a 40 minute firefight, the longest since the barrier went up three years ago.
Rev. John C. Greene, 79, longtime Homer City resident for 48 years, died Saturday at home. He served as pastor of Homer City, Brush Valley and Dilltown Baptist Churches. A full obituary runs in today's Indiana Evening Gazette.
NYC public schools opened as the largest system began a new term. A protest boycott over a token racial integration program by bus kept white children home in some areas, while a spot survey in Manhattan and the Bronx showed minimal interference. The two day boycott was led by parent and taxpayer groups and opposed by the school administration and many civic organizations.
