Hodges advances over 30 miles past Sedan toward the Saar as French troops reach Dijon and British forces seize Gent. Allied operations include American Third Army along the Moselle and Belgian towns such as Liege and Spa. German losses tally near 700,000 since Normandy, with 168,047 prisoners taken by Weidges’ forces through D-Day.
Hendaye September 2. French forces in the interior of Southern France rule a territory twice the size of Belgium with 2% more people than prewar Hungary. Rep Fulbright urged Congress to back world news freedom to foster understanding and prevent wars.

Guffey among speakers, while Republicans in Pittsburgh endorse Dewey and Bricker and denounce New Deal policies. AP dispatches report German forces evacuated Krosno near Krakow as Soviet offensives push toward Beskide Pass into Czecho Slovakia. Red Army and Tito’s Partisans advance from Romania Bulgaria into Yugoslavia as Axis resistance crumbles.
In Harrisburg today veterans of World War II become eligible for unemployment compensation under the Federal G1 Bill of Rights. Payments run 20 per week for total unemployment and prorated amounts for partial unemployment, with a 24 week initial period and four extra weeks per additional service month, up to a maximum of 2 weeks. The State Bureau will administer payments using U.S. Veterans Administration funds.
Allied air assaults in the South Pacific reach a fifth day with land based strikes on Formosa and operations against Halmahera and Celebes. Axis broadcasts claim 1000 planes attacked Palau and Yap, while Mindanao remains a frequent target for MacArthur’s bombers. Nimitz reports destroying shore defenses and communications in the Eastern Carolines as Palau and Yap are subjected to heavy fire.
