In Glendale California Clyde Allen Baker 16 suffocated in a small rear house behind his family home as a fire burned, while four relatives in the front house watched television. A younger sister discovered the blaze and alerted firefighters. The tragedy was a surprise to the family until then.
In San Francisco a balcony railing collapsed at an apartment, sending two men to the pavement. Roberto Valle, 24, father of a 4 month old, and Carley Watson, 25, died instantly. Victor Parker, 24, was seriously injured. Radford said two men leaned on the railing, there was a creak, then a crash as they fell.

A silent gunman used sign language to rob a Los Angeles market, forcing clerk Enrique Martinez to summon proprietor Addy Gerst. Gerst testified the suspect's .45 pistol made his demands clear as he opened the safe and handed over $500.
