In Allegheny County two insurgent Republican candidates, Harmar D. Denny Jr. for mayor and J. Corbett for sheriff, defeated regulars George D. Wick and Thomas E. Whitten. Denny led with 34,770 votes from 383 of 419 districts, while Scully, backed by Lawrence, held the Democratic slate for Pittsburgh mayor with 43,900 votes to Huston’s 96,095 from 931 districts.

Death in Grove After Shooting Near Roadside
A shooting drove a man about 500 feet to a roadside grove where State Motor Police found him with a bullet wound in the brow and throat. The victim’s correct name was determined after a clothing search. he had used the alias Arthur Anders with the Ruggeri family. Police continue the investigation.

Army reservation units from Fort Story Virginia combine the 112th Infantry Regiment one battalion of the 10th Field Artillery a detachment of the 103 Engineers provisional battalion of the 71st Anti Aircraft Regiment and an anti tank battalion of the 28th with 60 flags to simulate outfits. Reds commanded by Lt Col John Vanvliet blues by Maj Gen Edward Marin. Contact expected morning with heavy fighting near noon. Each force allotted two planes of the 103rd Observation Squadron.

The Danish flagged vessel Rooseveltsa was seized by the U S maritime commission and operated by an American firm. It was sunk by a submarine 300 miles southwest of Iceland on August 17 with one American missing and about 60 other Americans among the dead aboard foreign flag ships. An electrical storm struck a Willam George farm in South Mahoning Township Indiana County last night, destroying a 48 by 80 barn and all crops and farming machinery inside while cattle remained outside. Firemen were called from Kittanning but could not save the structure. damaged value is not estimated.
