The palatial steam ship North American of the Great Lakes fleet burned at Big Lake last night with an estimated loss of 1 250 000. About 20 crew members including Captain A B Anderson escaped by swimming ashore after an oil explosion. Passengers and hotel staff faced near misses as oil tanks blew out and a cottage roof was damaged, with several rescues by crewman F B Hendricks. The ship had served Chicago to Buffalo routes and was one of the lakes finest.
