Hampton Beach faced a four hour Labor Day Eve riot as about 10,000 teenagers battled state troopers local police and National Guardsmen. Authorities formed human wedges to drive the crowd from the beach area to town exits. About 200 arrests and 20 injuries were reported. Police offered no clear motive.
The state elections bureau certified all candidates for the November election including Genevieve Blatt as the Democratic U S senator candidate. Albert Eberman said Blatt is the candidate unless the U S Supreme Court delays her certification pending Justice Musmanno’s appeal on Philadelphia ballots.

In Agana Guam military and civilian authorities search for two Japanese World War II holdouts found footprints. Officials say the pair may still hide in jungle areas two decades after Guam was retaken, though police note prints could be from nearby farmers.
In Seaside Oregon police backed by state troopers and the National Guard arrested 104 youths on charges from disturbing the peace to inciting riot after clashes that drew 700 youths Saturday and Sunday. A drenching rain Monday ended the latest round of rioting in this coastal town 81 miles northwest of Portland.

Secretary of Highways Henry D Harral plans a 165 mile inspection tour of U S 219 from Bradford to Johnstown on Sept 15 to press for developing the route into a four lane interstate. Stops will include Ridgway DuBois Barnesboro Ebensburg and Johnstown as part of the push.
Du Bois pilot M. W. Houpt and three passengers escaped injury after an emergency landing at Greater Pittsburgh Airport when the single engine plane could not lower its landing gear. He circled for nearly an hour to burn fuel before touching down on a foam covered runway, the aircraft skidding about 200 feet to a safe stop.
Five children missing since Monday were found safe in the Adirondack woods of northern Herkimer County. The group, aged 6 to 9, disappeared from a state park campsite at 4:30 p.m. and were located with two Irish setters among more than 100 searchers and bloodhounds overnight.
