Train disaster leaves twenty dead and thirty five injured
In a pre dawn crash five miles south of Springer Santa Fe Chief rammed a waiting mail train after a switch error by a Santa Fe fireman P C Caldarelli of Raton was shaken and confused officials said. The Chief traveling 40 to 45 mph crushed the mail train killing twenty and injuring thirty five or more. debris cleared after fourteen hours as bodies were recovered including a dormitory car brakeman Lawrence Mc Cobick of Raton. Associated Press reporter John B. Curtis described the wreck as twisted and jumbled like an accordion.

Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell rejected Albert J. Hayes's claim that the administration blackjacked industry to force a steel strike settlement.
