New York Stock Exchange Sees Major Firm Fail

News from September reports the failure of Watson & Edwards, a major grain broker with west ties, trading in stocks and railroad shares. No cause or asset estimates released. The announcement surprised traders who had anticipated a decline and had offset positions. Grain prices fell 2 cents per bushel but later recovered.

Ten Die In Fire At Webb Hotel In Washington

A disastrous blaze destroyed the Webb hotel at Snelton near Tacoma early today. Ten persons perished and one was dying, many leaping from windows to escape. Names listed include William Holes master mechanic for the Peninsular railroad, and Daniel J. Henne among the dead. The three story hotel burned rapidly after a fire started in the annex around 1:45 AM.

Disturbing News From Chicago and Elsewhere

A Commercial Telegraphers’ union member in Chicago faced arrest on a state warrant for allegedly tampering with telegraph lines owned by Western Union near Mayfair on April 23. He admitted disconnecting two lines but claimed orders to do so came from a Western Union wire chief. In Annapolis a man’s plea for separation from his wife of a day ends with a Navy leave. Alvin Mauphin, a Kentucky sailor, was ordered to report for duty, ending their short marriage plans. Washington reports the Jamestown Exposition company has sent $50,900, adding to over $100,000 already raised for the exposition debt payoff. In Rocky Ford a former state senator William N. Randall fatally shot himself while packing to move to Willimantic, Conn., to be with his family.

Meet Death Together Young Pair Run Down by Train

Seaford Delaware September 6 a 12 year old Benjamin Wootten and his 18 year old sweetheart Litan Taylor were found dead near the Delaware railroad tracks at Jaynon's station two miles north of Seaford. The pair, reportedly attending a party, crossed the tracks and were struck by a train. The bodies were found by the youths' parents who had warned them about danger near the rails.
