Washington reports a new division of contract distribution within the Office of Production Management to funnel defense orders to small and mid sized plants. It will break large contracts into smaller lots, aid reemployment, expand subcontracting, pool plant facilities and assign engineers to convert non defense sites to defense production.
North Central District Safety Association and Indiana County representatives head to tomorrow's championship with teams from Pennsylvania Electric Company Mine No 5 Seward, and Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company among others. Team rosters include Mulvehill, Doyle, Kruk, Gillin, Baldwin, Franklin, Kephart, Seese, Hoover.
W G Marshall of Westinghouse warned Pennsylvania Electric Association that peace after the war will leave the world poorer because production has focused on destruction rather than use. Total disbursements stood at 4,000 dollars across 984 checks, compared with 4,299,988 checks the prior week and 8,251,387 for the comparable week in 1940.
In Indianola Mississippi on September 5 a Curbstone Sitters Club meeting broke up in haste as a car lurched toward them. The driver claimed a bee flew into her blouse causing a startled veer into a corner building and a quick return. She apologized saying a bee had entered her blouse.
Wheat prices declined slightly on profit taking in early trading with mixed openings and substan tial price range. Pittsburgh livestock markets remained steady with hogs cattle and calves receipts listed while produce demand slowed at Pittsburgh markets with varied basket and potato prices noted for regional varieties.
Pittsburgh Sept 6 Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt told a Syria Mosque audience that the nation’s youth may have to meet force with force as they organize ideas for a world driven by military power. She urged reflection on why personal government and life are valuable and whether one would fight or die for them, noting civilian defense alongside military needs. She spoke on dangers to democracy and the role of youth in making democracy more just at home.
Riverside California report says William L. Marks of Feltington West Virginia, drafted February 14, learned he is 38 and ineligible for the draft once his birth certificate arrived, contradicting prior eligibility. The war department had authorized release of men over 28.
