Death Dominates Holiday Weekend
Automobiles killed five persons in Indiana County and vicinity over the holiday weekend. Two pedestrians died on county highways and three, including three Bomegardner siblings, perished in a collision six miles west of Kittanning. Austin Barnes, 26, of Port Arthur Texas, died after a hit and run struck him during a dice game in Clarksburg. A bus driver, Thomas C. McCurdy, 36, of Pittsburgh, survived a crash with a group traveling to Lebanon. The weekend also saw a Bentleyville man die after being struck by a bus on William Penn Highway. Death strikes Canfield boy in Indiana home
The four year old son of Harry Canfield and Elizabeth Canfield of 623 Church Street died suddenly at about 10 30 this morning. He was the son of Harry A Canfield Sr head of the music department and orchestra leader at Indiana High School. A complete obituary will appear in tomorrow's issue. The notice also reports the death of Mrs Lena Adams Johnston in Indiana after old age complications.

A band of 36 convicts escaped from the Arkansas penitentiary on Labor Day killing a guard and wounding another. Two escapees were captured after a 30 minute gun battle at Garland City. The group abducted three youths near Rayville, Louisiana, and a Columbia, Louisiana, posse member Frank Gartman was killed as authorities closed in. Thieves Loot Iselin Co Store in Iselin
Thieves backed a car to the side window of the Mahoning Supply Company Store in Iselin early Monday, broke a pane and took goods worth about 300 dollars. This was the second robbery, with 300 pounds of meat and a meat slicer among the items stolen. Police reported three witnesses saw the burglary from nearby windows and a passerby noted men in a car possibly playing poker. An arc lamp lit the scene.

Flames swept the roof of the six story Seventh Avenue Hotel as firemen battled the blaze last night. The fire started in a ground floor kitchen and climbed through a ventilating duct to a penthouse, damaging fan motors before it was controlled. Battalion Chief Hugh Hunter put losses at $1,500. About 100 people remained in the cocktail lounge, unaware of the fire, while a few guests on upper floors moved to the lobby after smelling smoke.

Smith G Spicher of Indiana flew from Braebreeze Airport near Punxsutawney with two passengers including William Allison Jr a 48 year old former Army Air Corps flyer.
