In Blairsville a resident alerted neighbors and shut off gas before firemen arrived. Fire Chief Robert C. L. Shumaker Jr. said a faulty gas line ignited at the Louis Zimmerman residence, 324 North Liberty Street, with flames under control on arrival at 5:35 p.m. No damage was reported.
Investigators seek the trigger for a Wednesday shootout outside Precinct Station Two in Pittsburgh Hill District. Suspect John Mangham, 26, a former mental patient released from Mayview State Hospital, is charged with assault with intent to kill and related firearms offenses. A bystander was wounded, and Sgt. Harold Friedman, 47, a white officer, was among the injured. Police are unsure if the incident was racially motivated.
Prime Minister Eisaku Sato of Japan says the Japan United States relationship will not change because of Nixon's new economic policy. In a James Reston interview, Sato said repercussions could be far reaching but that both nations are in the same ship and must avoid sinking together.

Knickerbocker cited the 1969 corporate tax hike from 7% to 12% as a volatile period for firms.

SAIGON AP The U S Command said nineteen Americans were killed in action in Vietnam last week the highest weekly toll in seven weeks but the lowest level of casualties in six years. Ninety eight Americans have died in action in that period a weekly average of 14 compared with 36 this year and 278 three years ago.
About 200 teachers in the Steel Valley School District near Pittsburgh authorized a strike after a 16 hour negotiating session failed to produce a new contract. Teachers were to report today and Friday for in service training and classes next Tuesday. Issues in dispute were economic and noneconomic.
A one-year-old girl from Cleveland, Bonnie Nagle, was killed in Mineral Point, Pennsylvania when she fell under a pickup driven by her uncle Kenneth Nagle as the vehicle moved forward. The infant had just been placed down by her mother in the yard during a visit with relatives.
Greek government says four people including Lady Amalia Fleming and two Americans admitted plotting to help Panagoulis, a life-sentenced dissident, escape from a military prison. The group planned to drug a guard and flee over the fence. Fleming would drive the getaway car. Panagoulis previously escaped in 1969 and later faced renewed legal action.
