Americans In Rhone Valley Near Lyon in French Campaign

American tanks and infantry pierced Nazi rearguard lines in the upper Rhone Valley near Lyon as German forces retreated northwest with Allied forces within 60 miles of the city. Swiss reports via British radios claimed American troops crossed the Italian border after Nice and linked with Italian partisans. Valence, 55 miles south of Lyon, fell yesterday and Le Bourg Du Pease, 11 miles northwest, capitulated earlier as American advances closed in from the east. Crowds Pack Indiana County Fair Amid Rain Delays

Jerome E. Boone of Amityville Long Island died at Indiana Hospital Wednesday at 7 40 pm from a skull fracture after a rock fragment struck him at a coal stripping project near Elders Ridge Boone a DuPont technical representative supervising a blasting operation and with George McKay retreated to a safe distance but a fragment hit Boone on the back of the head The victim born December 2 1908 in Stettenbosch South Africa The body was sent to Amityville for funeral and burial in Amityville Cemetery

Three Local Boys On Casualty List

The War Department released a list naming 1,071 wounded soldiers. Included are Sgt Patsy Pakniseno of Salisbury and Pvt John T Yard of Aullinail, both wounded in Europe, and 2nd Lt William H Shearer of 188 North Liberty St Blairaville wounded in the Mediterranean area.

Eighth Army Breaks Gothic Line in Italy Advance

Allied forces pierced the Gothic Line in northern Italy with 1000 yard depth gains near Montecchia and moved into Nazi defenses north of the Foglia River.
