Ship's Last Trip Fatal to Four Men
Kenosha Wisconsin Oct 21 Chief Engineer John Peterson and three assistants were cooked to death on the steam barge Maggie Marshall from Manistee in midlake off Kenosha when a steam pipe burned. Escape steam killed the men at their posts. Three crew reached Kenosha after swimming a wire against a prow wind. The steamer was on its last trip of the season and the crew of thirteen was talking merrily when the steam pipe burst killing four below. The main valve blew into the stairway and men on the upper part closed the hatches. The steamer then anchored started the bells and sent a distress signal. With no aid three sailors volunteered to reach shore. The sea was high and within a mile of shore their boat capsized and the men swam the rest of the distance. Aldrich Says He's Not Afraid. New York Oct 2 United States Senator Aldrich of Rhode Island arrived from Europe. The senator said he is not afraid of letters affecting him published by W R Hearst taken from Standard Oil offices. Saint Conference's Work Futile. East Liverpool Oct 21 The Joint conference between Sanitary Potters Manufacturing Association and the National Brotherhood of Operative Potters adjourned without agreement. The wage agreement expires Nov 1.
