Both Sides Urge Nuclear Limitations

In Bonn the Soviet Union and United States pressed for talks to limit nuclear weapons in Europe to the lowest possible level. Brezhnev returned from his West visit as Moscow and West Germany issued a joint communique praising continued negotiations in Geneva. Schmidt urged the Soviets to consider Reagan’s zero option and warned of halting 1983 Pershing and Cruise missile deployments if no progress is made. See Page 10.

Asbestos Pipe To Be Tested In Blairsville

A section of asbestos cement water pipe from the 1940s 1950s on Conemaugh Street Blairsville will be excavated and sent to Pittsburgh Testing Lab for analysis. The Blairsville Water Authority oversees removal while the Blairsville Committee for Safe Drinking Water pushes for pipe replacement and possible legal action over alleged asbestos in the drinking water.

Polyunsaturates Now Said To Cause Cancer

San Francisco AP reports Dr. Kent Erickson of UC Davis warns that high polyunsaturated fat intake may raise cancer risk in individuals with family history, by increasing tumor growth in mice and potentially suppressing immune lymphocytes. He contrasts safflower oil with coconut oil and notes a grant from the National Cancer Institute.

Blairsville police chief facing traffic charges reduced by court

Abortion Bill Vote Postponed In Harrisburg

The Pennsylvania House postponed a vote on a restrictive abortion bill to December 8 after long debate on a sentencing bill. Backers claimed sufficient votes, but concerns over procedural challenges and private caucuses led Rep. Stephen Freind to defer. The measure would require a 24 hour cooling off period and bar abortions after fetuses are well developed, respecting Supreme Court allowances for health or life of the mother.
