President Reagan struggles to maintain control in Congress as Republicans and Democrats question further economic victories. 18 Republicans defected on a cut in the spending resolution while the Senate committee rejected deep reductions, signaling a harder path for unity on Reagan's agenda.

Indiana County foreman Donald H. Hetrick 43 of Rochester Mills died in a coal tipple accident at Champion Coal in Punxsutawney RD 5 near Route 36. Coroner ruled accidental death from massive head injuries after he was pulled into a moving belt while cleaning a conveyor. He died at Punxsutawney Area Hospital and is survived by his widow and two children.
