In Montgomery Alabama a white male jury acquitted two white men charged with dynamiting a Negro church amid warnings of potential racial violence from a prosecutor. The case drew national attention.
A Dauphin County grand jury indicted three men on bribery charges connected to turnpike operations. New charges against Britt and others raise total indictments to 26 from an original Gov. A Memorial Day stock car race at Pinegrove Speedway near Clarion ends in tragedy when a rear wheel separates, climbs mesh fencing, and kills 13 year old Harold Brunn and 15 year old Mary Lou Lindey. Two adults and one child are injured, including Lindey’s father. Ted Wise, driver from Hubbard Ohio, unharmed. Coroner to hold inquest. promoter Ralph Quarterson linked to Otta Racing Inc.

A galaxy of prizes awaits the 100 drivers entered in the second annual Indiana County Soap Box Derby. Derby director Donald Myers announced the June 19 races will crown a champion who takes a trophy, a bicycle, a National Soap Box Derby award, an all expenses trip to Akron for All-American races, and other gifts. Runner-up also earns a bicycle and division trophy, with heat winners receiving trophies and sporting goods. All drivers get awards. Prizes will be on display at the former Mutuhead’s Men’s Store. Final preparations are under way. The races start mid afternoon June 9 after a Main Street parade and run until about 7 pm, followed by an awards program. The event is to be held on West Philadelphia Street.
Washington reports that English, a high Teamsters official and rival of Dave Beck, may have helped Senate investigators locate Dave Beck Jr. and other relatives. The Beck group was cut off from Teamsters payroll two months ago, traveled to Canada, and later returned to face subpoenas on the West Coast. Beck Jr., McEvoy, and Beck Sr. relatives are to testify next Tuesday amid alleged connections to Beck's money dealings.
