Washington May 29 The post office department is self supporting for the first time in nearly thirty years and has returned 3 million dollars to the treasury. A postal surplus exceeds 1 million dollars and may grow with the year. Taft calls the achievement a notable administration success, crediting business methods and expansion of profitable lines over facility cuts.
At Hawthorne West Curve Dead Man's Bend a spectacular smash at the Chicago track killed Harry Nixon of Dayton and injured several others. Paul J. Bailew of Indianapolis suffered a fractured skull and crushed ribs. S Hinkley of Aurora broke a collar bone. Frank Hart of Springfield was cut and bruised.
Lisbon on May 28 reports elections passed without incident. Monarchists took no part and most candidates were officially appointed by Republicans. A cyclone struck Pekin Illinois on May 29 killing Clyde Sakers sixteen and Frank Woodles thirteen and injuring Lewis Schaeffer William Schaeffer Martin Schaeffer and Thomas Davis. The storm damaged tinroofed buildings, blew away church steeples, and left streets impassable as telegraph and telephone services were destroyed.
Clarence Darrow will travel east on Wednesday to investigate Indiana Ohio and Illinois to locate evidence against John J McNamara and his brother J B tied to dynamite plots. The McNamaras provided what they recalled about the arrest and possible evidence for their defense.
More than 100000 people visited the ships of the second division of the North Atlantic fleet in Copenhagen on a May visit. Petty officers and crews were hosted at Tivoli Garden by the admiralty. Each guest received a cigar case bearing US and Denmark arms and the men then attended theaters and films, their uniforms serving as admission.
