Paris dispatch reports Gen. Charles de Gaulle speeding to the capital after a Coty summons amid mass protests. About 30,000 French citizens demonstrated against his potential return, while he was expected to meet Coty to discuss forming a new government.
In heavy rain two colorfully dressed Presbyterian groups met at a Pittsburgh street corner to unite the Presbyterian Church in the U S A and form one church. Leaders hailed the merger as a step toward broader Protestant unity as reverends spoke of fellowship and shared mission.
A coal truck fire near Armagh caused about 1200 in damages. The Armagh East Wheatfield Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the blaze, focusing on the cab and transmission. Driver Glen Thompson escaped injury as the truck, leased to Thompson Coal Company, rolled off Clyde Hill Route 22 briefly before stopping near an embankment.
A fifteen year old Indiana youth, William Malcolm, was run over by a truck on Philadelphia Street then backed over both feet near Taylor Avenue. He suffered no broken bones, and was treated at Indiana Hospital after the incident reported around 3 15 p m.
Detroit AP report says United Auto Workers ask for Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services to break a deadlock with General Motors. GM rejects mediation, claims little help possible, and presses to extend wage formula. talks continue with a midnight contract expiry looming. Ford and Chrysler contracts also expire, with increases proposed over two years. Production workers now average 2.40 hourly.
An auto careening around a sharp curve on Route 66 south of Ford City, Armstrong County, hit an abutment killing 25 year old William Scott of McGrath. Scott was a passenger in a Ford City area vehicle driven by Ray A. Stotler age 20. Stotler was admitted to Armstrong County Hospital in Kittanning with skull and arm fractures.
Supt Clyde Hill reports a native of India bird named Joe the mynah was stolen from City Park Zoo last night. The wise cracking parrot like fowl whistles bugle calls, mimics a song and asks viewers what they are looking at as it chats in a playful tone.
Washington AP supporters of statehood for Alaska won a major victory by whipping 199-174 a motion to pigeonhole their bill. The outcome could hinge on absent members and final passage votes. With five vacancies, the House has 430 members. 973 were tallied in the vote to kill Rep. Walter Rogers motion to send the bill back to Insular Affairs. House by voice vote reversed yesterday’s action, voting 144-106 to strike the enacting clause.
The House Appropriations Committee ordered a defense budget boost for the coming fiscal year totaling $38.31 billion, approving $113.6 million more than the Defense Department request. It rejected reductions to National Guard, Army Reserve, and Marine Corps strengths and funded nine new ballistic missile submarine launches rather than five. The panel also allotted $2.733 billion for research and development.
The CAB announces creation of three transcontinental skyways to start June 15. Ground control will manage all flights between 17 000 and 22 000 feet within 40 mile wide corridors, separating aircraft 1000 feet vertically and 10 minutes horizontally. Airlines pledged pilot compliance above 10 000 feet.

Guards from all services escorted their black coffins into the public viewing area for Memorial Day observances and a somber procession to honor the fallen.
Washington AP reports the House Ways and Means Committee voted 21 to 2 for a one year extension of corporate income and excise taxes at current rates. A proposal to give auto makers tax relief was rejected 19 to 2, and an amendment to cut the new car excise tax from 10 to 7 percent was defeated. The measure now goes to the full House for action next week. Memorial Day items and local ads appear in the surrounding text.
President Eisenhower told a news conference that the recession has largely spent its force and America is weathering it well. He opposed general tax cuts, citing potential deficit risk, while noting no predictions on a business upturn or full employment. He stressed tax matters require careful study and favors only small business relief at this time.
Belgrade Yugoslavia The Soviet Union postponed for five years a credit arrangement between the two nations prompting concern in Yugoslav Soviet relations. Tanjug said the decision caps a deteriorating exchange and finance relationship with Yugoslavia. The Soviet Union had promised economic credits totaling 250 million dollars in two agreements.
The Navy only second basket ball size Vanguard satellite failed to reach orbit after launch near midnight from Cape Canaveral. The 2145-pound sphere flew 2000 miles into space then returned to Earth five hours later. Engineers reported all three Vanguard engines fired correctly, but the craft did not reach the horizontal trajectory required for orbit. The episode marks the fourth failure in five Vanguard attempts, contrasted with two Explorer successes in three Jupiter C launches.
