Krist Convicted In $500,000 Transom Kidnapping
Decatur Ga AP Gary Steven Krist, 24, was convicted by a praying jury of abducting Emory University junior Barbara Mackie in a box with food, tranquilizer water and a ventilation system. He received a life sentence on the jury’s mercy recommendation after the state sought the death penalty. Jurors deliberated with prayer. foreman Rainwater cited his mercy due to Krist’s precautions to keep Mackie alive. Krist’s lawyers offered no defense, choosing mercy in final arguments.
