Miners Stage Protest Over Store Policy

More than 300 Lucernemines miners wives and children protested a credit policy change at Mahoning Supply Company this morning causing the store to close. Union Local 488 said management announced a temporary credit policy change after yesterday’s talks. Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Co owned mines report no statement. county mines idle due to a lost shift dispute affecting about 2,500 miners.

Taylor Bids Long List To Philar Meet

Coplon Spy and Attorney Apply for Marriage License

Judith Coplon, a 29 year old former government employee convicted of spying for Russia, and lawyer Albert H. Socoloy, 29, obtained a Brooklyn marriage license at Borough Hall. The license is valid for 30 days. Socoloy is with the firm that defended Coplon who is appealing a 25 year prison sentence.

Lesinski Dies in His Sleep Amid Congressional Career

U S Rep John Lesinski of Michigan 65 died in Dearborn after a heart attack early today. veteran chair of the House Education and Labor Committee backed labor causes and Taft Hartley opposition, had planned a tenth term. Lesinski returned from Washington for the recess and died after breathing difficulties following a social evening with friends. China Reds Withdraw From Wanshan Island to Formosa

Hong Kong. May 27. Nationalist forces evacuated the Wanshan Islands southwest of Hong Kong, handing them to the Communists. Royal Navy reported the base was cleared by 8 a.m. and Canton remains open to foreign trade for the first time in eight months. Nationalists claimed 4,000 Red troops annihilated in a second amphibious attempt. 1,000 Nationalist soldiers were moved to Lingting Island for final evacuation to Formosa.

Ambulance Death After Return From Cleveland Clinic

Stanley Bury, 26, of Black Lick died last night while being transported from the Cleveland Clinic back to Cambria County for further treatment. Blairsville Man Receives Six Months To A Year Jail Term

Steve Mazurek, 23, of Blairsville, was sentenced in Westmoreland County Court to a workhouse term of six months to a year for assault and battery and solicitation by threats to commit robbery. Greensburg police charged him with trying to force a young woman to rob an elderly man. He was acquitted of pointing a deadly weapon and carrying a firearm. The sentence will be served in the Allegheny County Workhouse.

Spelling Bee Ends In Tie After Long Competition

In Washington the 23rd National Spelling Bee ended in a two way draw as Diana Reynard, 12, of East Cleveland Ohio, and Colquitt Dean, 14, of College Park Georgia, each spelled 48 and 49 words respectively before words ran low. Each champion received 500 plus a trip to New York.
