Moscow Baby Farm Described as World Largest Institution

The New York Tribune reports that Moscow hosts what is called the largest baby farm, with an estimated annual crop of 14 000 babies and a St Petersburg branch at 4 000. Founded in Catherine the Great’s era and funded by playing card taxes, it is guarded by royal servants, audited by the treasury, and set in a hollow square around a garden used as a playground. About fifty babies arrive daily and four weeks later are placed with homes in villages. Chamberlains ointment touted for quick relief of rheumatic or neuralgic pain.
