Governor Pinchot asks the General Assembly to enact humanitarian measures in the labor program. He seeks to shorten the workday for children under sixteen from 41 to 48 hours, urging statutory action this session in Harrisburg.
Four escape plotters triggered a violent riot at the Vandalia state farm prison. About a dozen inmates and several guards were injured as dormitories burned and prison buildings, valued around $19,000, were destroyed before National Guardsmen arrived and restored order. Commanders cited a planned breakout by four prisoners led by Charles Robers, William Smon ds, Arthur Ragan, and Charles Lewis as the riot’s direct cause.
In Chicago on May 25 Mrs Alice Costello testified about the March 28 slaying of her husband Patrick Costello. She followed showups and identified Dominic Pantaleo 24 as the killer among suspects brought before her. Five witnesses later confirmed seeing Pantaleo in the group.
The House debated Mason and Hermansen measures on final passage and miners asthma compensation while the Hoopes bill failed. Salus measure sits in the House manufacturers committee. BELLEFONTE Pa May 25 UP two men convicted of murdering four pay roll guards by dynamiting a mine pay car were electrocuted at Rockview Prison Szachewicz Wilkes Barre and Nafus Plymouth Luzerne County were executed in sequence after brief sentences both men spoke not a word and their bodies were claimed by relatives for homeward burial The killings dated January 13 1930 involved Arthur Webb and three guards in an improvised pay car explosion leading to a money scatter and a wide police probe ending in Nafus and Szachewicz being linked and convicted
A festival and motion picture will be held at the Brush Valley Community Hall on Saturday evening May 30.
Four persons were killed yesterday when a car was struck by a truck ascending a hill. State highway patrolmen said the truck driver swung to the roadside to avoid collision, nearly leaving the pavement. The car was demolished by the impact. Courtwright and Mise Weaver died at the scene.
New York May 25 UP The chauffeur Harry Schlitten alias Harvey confessed after 16 hours of questioning that he drove the car in which Vivian Gordon rode to death. He named Harry Stein as the killer and said Samuel Greenberg aided in strangling Gordon with a clothesline. Stein is indicted. Greenberg to be arraigned today. Schlitten and Izzy Lewis alias English to be held as witnesses. The story says Gordon was lured into the car over diamonds valued at 200,000 and the crime occurred in Van Cortlandt Park with the body dumped nearby. Journal notes say jewelry and a mink coat were taken to fund the crime.
A United Press tally shows at least thirteen killed and many injured in Western Pennsylvania over the weekend. The report cites crashes in Blairsville Sharon Altoona and Pittsburgh with multiple fatalities including Nick Stefan Mrs Anna Zecka John W. Griffith James Bearer John Brady Patsy Paris Arthur McNelly Dr. Benjamin B. Zimmerman Karl Ackerman Morvis Williams and George Snowdon among others. Coroner Dr Fred W St Clair and State Highway Patrol investigated several incidents as victims were taken to Wilmerding Blairsville and local hospitals.
A North Carolina born woman, Mrs. Hayes, died yesterday after a long life in service to church and family. Survived by husband and son James of Ernest, she moved from Sykesville to Ernest recently. Funeral at the Ernest church hall Wednesday at 2 PM, Rev. Stephens of Pittsburgh officiating. Interment in Oakland Cemetery.

A bomb blew a hole in the Braddock Bowl office building in Braddock Pennsylvania early today. A fire broke out but was soon put out. Police found two more bombs and two five gallon cans of oil nearby. The arena hosts a tonight bout between Tommy Freeman the former welterweight champion and Jack Buck McTiernan of Swissvale.
U S steel leaders say trade will rise but warn wage reductions threaten recovery. Swope argues industries must cover unemployment costs to stabilize work and confidence, while Farrell notes foreign markets must absorb at least ten percent of production. He cites rising savings as a hopeful sign and anticipates a constructive outcome from the foreign trade convention. Sunday guests Elfred Jones and Thelma Wickes visited Portage and Summer Hill residents.
