New York May 23 The Republic Iron and Steel Co announces it will set prices to meet demand without regard to a manufacturer consensus. Wall Street hears rumors of lower bar prices and debate on open market effects, while Judge Gary hopes for continued cooperation in the steel industry. Renbute Tron and Steel, a Gates enterprise, is noted as a major bar producer.
In Harrisburg on May 25 a House Senate dispute over initiative and referendum stalled as a conference committee fought over Pittsburg charter language. Chief Clerk Garvin was struck in the eye by a twisted school code copy, swelling his eye and prompting an oculist. The Senate approved about 45 appropriation bills and sent back to the House the Capitol Park extension bill. The House kept its amendments on the brew and distiller licensing bill. Several Senate measures were defeated, including a constitutional amendment on public wages and the Ten Years’ teachers’ tenure bill. Separately, Fort Pitt Oil and Gas Co of Pittsburg formed to develop lands in Columbiana and Mahoning counties and elsewhere. Duveen was fined $15,000 in New York for conspiring to undervalue imports.
