Chicago May 23 The National Safety Council reports 18 500 farm residents died in 1946 from all accidents with 7 000 due to motor vehicle mishaps. The 1948 total rose nine percent from 1945’s toll of 17 500, driven by motor vehicle deaths from 5 500 in 1945 to 7 000 last year. Farm home accidents caused 1 200 deaths and property losses were substantial.

Gun Battle on Pittsburgh Street
A veteran policeman and a man he sought to arrest were wounded in a street gun battle. Patrolman Edward Bann, 86, shot and critically wounded Harry Manning, 43, after Bann was struck twice. Manning was taken to Mercy Hospital in critical condition. Bann's hip and hand wounds were not serious. Police found both men in the street. Manning fired first when Bann attempted to arrest him on a surety of the peace charge from Manning's wife.

Dublin reports Nazi agent Hermann Goertz, awaiting deportation, died by poison in the Dublin passport office.
