Bubna Trial Enters Final Stage Today
Erie May 23 AP final rebuttal witnesses took the stand in the mur der of burly Mike Bubna and his sister Mrs Mibte Thomas amid indications the case would be given to the jury this afternoon. Mrs Thomas denied any part in the March 4 slaying of Robert Fisher and accused a State Police investigator of being fresh with her before arrest. She said Sgt Willard Schauers was fresh sometime ago where her husband Carmen worked for Schauers in a garage the officer ran in off duty hours. Two witnesses described by the defense as of first importance were barred temporarily by a ruling of Judge Elmer L Evans. Roy Hackenberg and wife of Erie were not allowed to testify. Bubna denied on the stand that he killed Fisher and said the victim was alive the night of March 4 when he left the Bubna home. Mrs Thomas testified she was in bed all that evening and night receiving treatment for a nervous ailment and did not see Fisher, though she heard a man in the kitchen she thought might have been him. The defendant was asked did Mike Bubna kill Bob Fisher in her presence and did you cut Fisher's hair and she answered Nol. The state contends Bubna shot Fisher to death and Mrs Thomas afterward borrowed a pair of scissors and cut Fisher's hair short. The Commonwealth alleges Fisher was slain as a result of a dispute among a gang of automobile thieves.
