Pynchon declines prestigious Howells Medal award

New York reports that income tax evasion and gambling charges against Joseph Colombo Sr. have been dismissed due to ill health. Federal attorneys suggested dropping the charges after Colombo, paralyzed and unable to speak since the 1971 Unity Day shooting, was unable to stand trial. The action was taken Tuesday.
