Flash Flood Disrupts Hayes Kansas City Area
A flash flood in Hayes Kansas and nearby regions left three people missing. Water reached six to eight feet in parts, especially near Fort Hays State College student housing. Police report an automobile carrying four persons swept off the highway four miles west of Hays. the driver Douglas Laton of Wakeeney escaped but could not locate his three companions. Heavy rains and creek overflow triggered evacuations by boat. Red Cross opened relief stations and evacuees were moved to churches and schools.

An 84 year old mother shot her three year old daughter during a phone call to the father and then wounded herself. Police said Betty Deeb planned the act after threats to kill Connie and herself. Connie was wounded in the chest and could live. the mother in the head was not certain to survive. The couple had been separated.
