Find UMW Guilty In Trust Suit

The jury found United Mine Workers and welfare fund conspired to monopolize the coal industry and restrain trade. Trustees sought 56000 in back fund royalties from Phillips, who crossfiled alleging excessive royalties. The case, tied to the 1950s wage contract, could trigger appeals and motions to set aside.

Candidate Ordered To Show Cause In Court Contempt Case

Pittsburgh AP Leo F Flynn Republican candidate for Allegheny County sheriff was ordered to appear Monday to show why he should not be held in constructive contempt of court for remarks attacking Judge Weiss in a numbers case. Flynn, a former city officer, led the raid on a floating numbers operation and spoke as a private citizen.

Indiana County Berg science seminar names announced

Ninth grade students from Indiana County high schools were selected for the 1961 62 Berg science seminars starting July 12. The list includes Robert Bell Kenneth Brown Kenneth Campbell Iantha Jane Davis and others from United Joint Penns Manor Blairsville Marion Center Blairsville City Blairsville Joint and Laura Lamar Joint. Current tenth graders Elgine Allen Penny Barchfield Robert Cherry David Hulin William Jones Harry Kinter George Robeson Nancy Sahli Laura Shearer and Robert Young will continue into a second year. Seminars meet each Wednesday at Indiana State College for two and a half hours to provide broader scientific instruction.

Mixed race group boards Greyhound bus in Alabama

A racially integrated group of about two dozen passengers finally boarded a Greyhound bus from Birmingham to Montgomery after 18 hours of delays. Driver Joe Cavanaugh warned he would not risk his life for integration efforts as tensions rose among crowds awaiting the 100 mile trip.

Kennedy Khrushchev Vienna summit may open talks series

None Injured in Three Car Mishaps

A cow wandered onto Route 119 near Homer City injuring no one in a crash with George Askew’s car. Three other crashes nearby involved Alina Hranitz, Paul Runyon, and Thomas Gerber, with $50 to $150 damages and no injuries reported.

Tense city endures seventh day of mounting racial strife

A group of youths tried to board three buses to Montgomery but none departed. They waited in the white waiting room and vowed to stay until a bus to Montgomery could be found. Drivers refused to run the buses amid fears of violence as mounting tensions persisted. The group moved Ackers toward Montgomery at 2:45 pm Friday, noting they would not depart until an integrated bus service existed.

Navy officer defends military role in Cuban invasion

An unidentified Navy officer told AP that no military man would have approved the plans for the Cuba invasion and criticized efforts to blame the Joint Chiefs.
