White Township school board nominees lead GOP primary
Unofficial White Township results show Dr. Kenneth Sayers Lisle M Brady and Lucile N Simpson winning GOP nominations for three year terms on the township school board. They defeated Dr. Trevor Hadley Thomas M Mikesell and Dora M Clark. Sayers led with 1740 votes Brady 715 Simpson 681 Hadley 664 Mikesell 661 Clark 631. Also GOP supervisor nominee Harry Dedenfer garnered 437 votes, with Benjamin Lemoon close at 365 on a sticker campaign. Democratic votes: Myrtle E McConnell 230 Gladys B Penrod 216. See page 4.

Walter Work of Rochester Mills, RD, won a narrow nomination for treasurer after late counting at the county courthouse. Unofficial tallies placed him ahead by 83 votes over Nichol, with three precincts still uncounted in Nichol's home area.

Jeffries Clinches Indiana County Sheriff Nomination
Jeffries, chairman of his party and a top vote getter, won the Republican nomination for a fourth term as sheriff of Indiana County. He led with 4,976 votes across 76 of 77 precincts, defeating Paul Craig, Sheloca RD., and Donald Smith who totaled 4,247. He will face Democrat George Merrill in November. Craig gathered 2,286 votes and Smith 1,952 in the primary. Jeffries led early and widened his margin as results continued to come in.

Blast Rocked Martin Plant Seaplane Hull Killing Five
A Baltimore Martin Co hangar blast during hull cleaning with a solvent killed five workers and injured at least five others. A Martin spokesman said a dozen to ten men were using pressure hoses to bathe the hull of a two engine seaplane when a muffled explosion occurred, filling the hangar with smoke but little fire. An inquiry was started by Maryland deputy medical examiner Dr. Melvin Davis. The cause remains undetermined. Identified injured include Inbo Duan 27, James Holly 36, and Jacob Goldstein 42. The hangar used for cleaning and painting seaplanes is separated from the main plant by airfield and an Air National Guard detachment. Identification of the dead was withheld pending next of kin.

Hoffa Denies Nationwide Teamsters Strike Threat
Hoffa rejected claims he threatened a nationwide strike over proposed labor laws. He told the Houston Chronicle the reports from Brownsville, Texas were distortions and there is no plan for a national strike. An AP reporter cited Hoffa’s remarks to longshoremen as implying a contract end date and a primary strike, but Hoffa insisted no such threat exists.

Lafayette shooting spree ends with police deaths
A gun crazed man in Lafayette Parish Louisiana shot and killed two police officers before being fatally wounded. Coroner Henry Voorhies identified the suspect as Albert Victor Voorhies who barricaded in a house after entering Mrs Ducharme's home and shooting a white mother. Tear gas and grenades failed to stop him as he wounded officers and tied two boys before they escaped.
