In Los Angeles the moderator of the General Assembly Dr. Ralph Waldo Lloyd urged admitting women to Presbyterian ministry and urged churchwide nonsegregation. He said the church must open all service possibilities to women and called for action on these issues later in the session.
In Madisonville Kentucky a young mother Martha Lou Pert 22 and her two daughters Ladona 3 and Laura Pauline 1 died in a three room frame home fire. Jesse Pert 28 husband escaped but was burned seriously. The blaze occurred around 3 25 a m. Jake Q Oates the man who lives nearby said he saw breaking glass and ran to help but flames prevented rescue. Cause of the fire was not determined.
The Presbyterian Church splits delayed a three group unification. the United States group did not approve. The church reported a net gain of 77,225 members in 1954, bringing communicant membership to 2,658,903 and baptized persons near 3.4 million plus adherents around 6.42 million.
New York reports former President Herbert Hoover told the National Industrial Conference Board that his commission on government organization can save taxpayers six billion dollars and recoup seven more by liquidating overlapping agencies. He said the plan eliminates waste without harming defense or welfare and expects about 70 percent of recommendations to be enacted.
