Battle for Holiz Bay Ridge Ends With Heavy Casualties
Allied forces faced heavy Japanese resistance at Holiz Bay with 700 to 800 Americans sustaining losses throughout the day. After intense naval and air bombardment the enemy shifted to ridge positions at night. A small detachment maintained contact with the main force and recovered 19 American prisoners. Returning troops, exhausted and wounded, were relieved by food and cigarettes from comrades.
