Frank Gwynn and Frank Gwynn Jr. are jailed in Indiana County awaiting preliminary hearings before Justice Walter H. Jackson at 8 p.m. Wednesday on charges of selling beer and liquor without license and furnishing alcohol to minors. Detective William J. Moore reports the arrests occurred Saturday night by state police and local officers under Pennsylvania law.
May 20 opening service and holy communion mark the start of the 98th Pittsburgh Synod of the United Lutheran Church in America. Dr H H Bagger presides, with ministers Brant Simplett Lynch Troutman assisting. state officers also noted. A later report states August Urban, Sum mit Inn proprietor, was arrested for Sunday dancing after prior charges, as officers checked roadhouses on the William Penn route.
Italy shows no definite shift toward joining the European war as Mussolini’s policy remains cautious. German forces push through northern France in the 11th war day with St Quentin captured and Meuse bulge actions ongoing. Allied reinforcements falter as Nazi high command claims major advances toward Calais or Paris while British and French commanders warn of grim conditions and heavy losses.
The report details a Cadiz O man seriously injured in a car crash while Nichols is at Indians Hospital with possible skull fracture and brain concussion. Western Pennsylvania adds to the weekend fatality count with at least 13 deaths including six highway deaths and four drownings. Other causes involve two electrocutions and a hunting related shooting death. Wynnefield and Bala Steam Heat Companies seek a merger in Philadelphia. Reading fights dangerous bridge conditions involving Reading Company and State Highway Department in Harrisburg. Ohio River Motor Coach Company seeks Friday Pittsburgh project to transport passengers between Bellefonte and Pittsburgh.
German motorcycle units reached Peronne before withdrawing at nightfall to avoid being cut off. Cambrai sector saw heavy German attacks east of the town as French forces brace for a do or die battle to halt the invasion.
