Pinchot Calls Law Change Over Public Service Board

Governor Pinchot argued the Pennsylvania public service law gave the governor hiring and firing power over Public Service Commissioners before the Von Moschzisker decision. He cited the judge’s ruling reinstating Benn and Shelby after dismissal in 1926 and said Sen Scott supported restoring that authority. Pinchot noted newspapers misquoted him and clarified his statements from Du Bois and Bellefonte.

Bottle Travels 3200 Miles in a Year From Bora Bora

A bottle tossed from Governor Pinchot’s ship in 1929 was returned by Robson Paul from Bora Bora in the Wind group. The note, a U S hydrographic office document, tracked currents and drift in the Pacific. Pinchot estimates the bottle traveled 3200 miles in 12 months, likely aided by the Humboldt current.

St Louis Firefighters Now Ultra Modern

On the 2nd anniversary of St Louis most destructive fire of May 17 and 18, 1849 the city boasts a modern fire department. The earlier blaze started with 100 volunteer firefighters and three men were killed as 466 downtown buildings 23 steamboats and millions in property damage were lost.

US Leader in Aeronautics Says U S Excels Worldwide

Assistant Secretary Clarence Young reported to President Hoover that the United States leads in civil aviation. The federal airways system already rivals others and will total about 25,000 miles when completed. In two years, 6,000 miles of lighted airways built, 6,000 airmen examined, 4,000 aircraft certified, and 700 municipal airports aided. Thieves in Monroe, Louisiana, raided a store safe and cash register, ringing up the amount taken before fleeing.

Washington May 19 The prohibition issue dominates the campaign with crusaders arguing prohibition linked to illiteracy and its disappearance by 1964. Memphis theatre offers Saturday organ lessons for schoolchildren.

MIT Students Riot At Dorm Bonfire In Cambridge

Cambridge Massachusetts May 19 More than 500 MIT students rioted as firemen battled a campus bonfire in a pajama party. Students doused hoses on firefighters and turned the blaze toward a dormitory then disassembled the hose and shoved firemen into rooms. No injuries or arrests reported as police kept a watchful stance. The incident followed a line of hose being laid and ended with the hose parts tossed into laundry chutes.
