No Horses Allowed on Roads to Verdun Paris

May 19 two days after the Verdun battle began an order required removing horse drawn vehicles from roads to Verdun. Within four hours the road was clear except for motor trucks and has remained so. Ammunition and provisions move by rail or motor, with about 2000 trucks daily in each direction and 4000 in the front area. Roads are sectioned for policing and repairs as road menders rush to clear trains and resume work after each convoy.

An all-women hospital on Buddell Street in London begins care for five hundred wounded and ill British soldiers. Every employee from chief surgeon to floor scrubber is a woman. the institution receives praise from inspectors.

Shooting at Wilgus Ends in Death

A Tuesday morning shooting near Wilgus left Andy Bridges 18, a Russian youth, fatally wounded by John Bruno, about 18, Italian. Bridges died at Indiana hospital after being shot in the stomach. Coroner notified. inquest set for 1:80 tomorrow afternoon. Gazette to publish further details.

London May 19 An ingenious person here has devised a way to weigh tom-tits without catching them. He fixes a bolt on the hook of a spring balance so that the bird in trying to eat the nut records its weight. Tom-tits weigh from one third to one half ounce each.

Darrell Figgis Arrested in Ireland Amid Disturbances

Darrell Figgis, noted Irish poet, was arrested in Ireland over political disturbances. He was taken into custody yesterday and confined in a military barracks in County Mayo.
