A fragmentary report describes the western mountain range rising as the globe cools, with ridges expanding and earthquakes occurring irregularly. It notes earthquakes may come in clusters and cites the western side as weaker, causing uneven seismic activity along the range.
Dun's Weekly Review of Trade notes higher temperatures accelerate seasonable merchandise and agricultural improvements though segmentation and irregular collections persist. Washington May 19 after 70 days the senate approved the railroad rate bill by a near unanimous vote. Three opponents were Foraker of Ohio Morgan and Pettis of Alabama. Senator Rayner criticized the president and warned of future shifts in policy while the chamber finished debates on amendments and adjourned.

In Philadelphia on May 10 the Democratic Italy committee discussed fusion policy for the coming campaign. National Committeeman M. Guffey said fusion hinges on conditions but would require a Democrat leading the ticket for governor, with other offices filled by candidates from uniting parties in a reform effort. Donnelly stated committee sentiment favored a Democratic governor candidate and unity without selecting individuals.
Washington May 19 the house labor committee held more hearings on the eight hour bill with EL Payson of Newport News Shipbuilding and Southern and Union Pacific railways leading opposition. President Gompers and Secretary Morrison of the American Federation of Labor attended. Shoey argued hearings are unnecessary and that opponents seek to dampen action and defeat the bill.
Berlin May 18 reports request for church services of prayer across Prussia for the Crown Prince Father of Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg Schwerin who was mourned by Crown Prince Frederick William. The emperor asks devotion as Cecilie’s condition is noted.
Wu Ting Fang favors reform in China proposing jury trials, native lawyers before courts, and electrocution over decapitation. Other items report a fraud case against City Ice Delivery Co. directors, a torpedo boat sinking near Port Said, a mine center fire in North Bay, and Karnage sails for Liverpool aboard the Andrew Carr.
