May 18 Punxsutawney residents are invited to a May 19 meeting at the community house to decide whether to continue the annual fair this fall. No money or stock sales. outcome depends on citizen opinion. If approved, a new group would run the 1926 event.
Six men were arrested early Sunday after police halted a car on the William Penn Highway east of town to aid a wrecking crew. A quart of liquor and two beer bottles were found in the tonneau of an Overland touring car. The ten were en route to Blairsville when detained, and the car remains held pending case decisions.
Sixteen hundred more patrolmen will be added to New York's police force on June 16.
Voters in a bitter Pennsylvania primary face a three way battle for the U S Senate with Senator George Pepper backed by Mellon, Wm Ware the Philadelphia boss, and Governor Gifford Pinchot. dry and wet factions split the party as independents loom and turnout fears rise across counties. A separate Kansas City note reports Teresa Kirshe, 18, leaping from a plane at 2110 feet with a parachute, then her sister seeking the parachute.
Alexander R. Hodges Jr., a former University of Kansas athlete, faces a New York robbery charge as jurors are picked. His proposed unique defense claims he robbed a restaurant to return money to the scene of the crime. Hodges allegedly held up a cashier and fled with 240 dollars, then was arrested near the crime site. Support from fraternity brothers and others in New York has poured in.
Paris May 18 The Seine tribunal handed heavy sentences to three English women and two French girls on espionage charges. The group arrested last December was found guilty of gathering information on French military and naval forces. Leader Leather received three years and 2000 francs fine. Two Englishmen Fisher and Phillips got two years and 2000 francs each. French girls Marthe Mureuil and Andree Lefev were sentenced to six months.
Washington May 18. Secretary of Agriculture Jardine announced a hearing set for June 2 to discuss a general interstate quarantine to prevent the spread of narcissus bulb pests. He said three pests are now established to some extent in various bulb growing districts in the United States.
Administration leaders plan a hybrid bill based on the Tincher and As well measures to resolve the farm relief stalemate. The proposed compromise targets the Haugen Bill’s equalization fee to stabilize prices, with House action expected amid Pennsylvania delegation absences and anticipated returns Thursday.

Virginia Vance Longworthy receives 10000 dollars. Three asks of 5000 dollars each go to Alexander Vance Jones grandnephew Robert Taylor Jones and H H Jones Jr. A 10000 dollar bequest goes to the Pittsburgh Protestant Episcopal Diocese board of trustees.
Workmen discovered a man with nine bullet holes in a ditch at Santiago near Pittsburgh. Victor Krisopsiky, railroad watchman, said he saw a car and heard shots before the lights went out. Detectives think the victim was lured into a car and shot. a notebook bore the name "Rone Monessa."
Washington May 18 Lt Comdr R E Byrd who first flew the north pole has decided against further Arctic flights. He will leave Kings Bay Spitzbergen Thursday for the United States after radios report. Byrd and pilot Bennett flew over the pole in a three motor Fokker plane from Kings Bay in about 15 to 12 hours.
Passengers accuse ship crew of neglect during the Seneca trip. Liquor sales were open aboard. Crew members reportedly intoxicated while eight men were taken ashore on large tugboats and many ladies had to use small boats. Some crew wore life preservers ahead of passengers causing concern, while most passengers praised Captain B. W. Leek of the Seneca.
The Seine tribunal dismissed Mme Lambrino’s suit demanding Prince Carol of Romania publicly recognize their son Micrea and pay tuition. It ruled the court incompetent to judge the matter. Lambrino, former mistress, sought acknowledgment and schooling costs plus a further settlement. Carol’s counsel cited a final settlement and ongoing alimony of $3,600 yearly.

New York May 18 ins reports Harriet F Sammet 42 a noted pianiste here and abroad was found dead this morning in a motel bathtub. She reportedly suffered a heart attack and submerged death. Cousin Mrs May Burrough said she was the divorced wife of George Victor Sammet head of a Boston chemical company. Also in New York May 16 a municipal court jury ruled continual barking by a dog in a neighboring apartment constituted a technical eviction and excused Alphonse G Kaufman from paying owed rent.
William Calhoun now in Harrisburg connected with the State Banking department spends a few days with Indiana friends. Elmer Haagen a Pine township Indian business visitor, Squire Chris Butterworth of Clymet, G. M. Cribbs Blairsville, Squire A. W. Campbell Black lick attend to business in Indiana. Mr and Mrs James Taylor and family of Pittsburgh visit Indiana relatives. R D Carnahan Saltsburg among out of town visitors. M H Stiffler Mollidaysburg in Indiana yesterday. Mrs Arthur McSwiney improving after three weeks illness. J Wesley Askins of Cherryhill township returns home in time for the election. James Notley after hospital treatment in Indiana is able to be out again.
Fire destroyed a recreation park near Loleta Elk county injuring volunteers from lumber camps and paper mills who halted operations to combat the blaze. The blaze began yesterday and drew responders from nearby communities as authorities work to control the conflagration.
May 18 Minnesota reports show Duluth area towns including Cramer destroyed by forest fires. One man killed while fighting the flames. About 100,900 acres burned, roads closed, relief trains dispatched, and a lumber mill, town hall, and many homes wiped out.
Police responded after a college head's daughter cried out around 10 PM and was found bound and gagged in the cellar. Her husband, Professor Guyer, and the dean, Charles T. Fox, expressed that authorities would pursue the attacker. the daughter gave no statement. The father said robbery seemed the motive. In a separate note, Ruby Blakeslee was critically injured after a block fall from a building roof to another roof, contacting a high voltage wire.
