A 6-year-old girl was returned to her parents in Somerset Pa after vanishing around the time jail escapee James Henry Kent 42 fled Somerset County Jail May 7 while awaiting sentencing for the slaying of a Johnstown dental technician. $100,000 Fire at Herr's Island Stockyards
Pittsburgh May 17 A three story brick building in the Herr's Island stockyards area burned last night causing unofficial damages of 100000. Seven alarms were struck before the flames were checked after three hours of effort. The blaze fed by fats and greases from the Pittsburgh Melting Company rendering plant and a heavy rain helped limit spread while explosions endangered firefighters. The severity recalled the 1939 joint stockyards fire which caused 206000 in losses.
